Hidden in plain sight, black ducks look similar to mallard hens and often flock with mallards. Look for the American black duck in the Eastern United States. They are cooler in tone than their brown mallard cousins, but frequently hybridize with the mallard to produce an incredibly beautiful specimen. The sexes of black ducks are alike.
